Description

The Excalibur collection, equipped with a Double Tourbillon Skeleton movement, was launched in 2005, a few years before Richemont acquired the brand in 2008. The collection has evolved over the years, and in 2016, Roger Dubuis turned its complete attention to just 2 collections: the Excalibur and the Velvet.

The Excalibur features powerful aesthetic and several exceptional mechanisms. Deliberately extravagant Excalibur timepieces are pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking with striking avant-garde. In 2017, RD joined forces with the automobile industry, forging partnerships with Pirelli and Lamborghini, and the Excalibur Spider collection was introduced with the first-ever movement plate, bridges, and tourbillon upper-cage entirely made in carbon – and Excalibur Quatuor Cobalt Micromelt® using exclusive technology of aeronautics and astronomy industries. This collection is a marriage of old-school watchmaking and cutting-edge engineering.

The present watch is the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Skeleton Automatic Ref: RDDBEX0473. The 42mm black DLC titanium case features the iconic Roger Dubuis tri-lug design. At 11.6mm thickness it is a fairly slim watch that easily slides under any cuff.

The face of the watch is rather intriguing. The rose gold skeletonised dauphine hands, the rose gold balance wheel and the jewels add contrast to the otherwise dark and ghostly aesthetic of this timepiece.

One look at it and it instantly looks like a technical marvel born out of an automotive design studio, but there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye. The in-house RD820SQ self-winding movement is entirely hand-skeletonised, with the faces of all of the 167 parts being individually hand-finished and approved with a Poinçon de Genève. The cover of the regulator assembly and the screws are black-polished.

It features a star-shaped “Astral Skeleton” bridge holding the mainspring and the gear train, and a micro-rotor, running on high-tech ceramic bearings. It offers a 60-hr power reserve. The absence of the dial and the baseplate makes every component of the watch extremely legible so you can admire the complexity as well as the traditional finish on this movement, both front and back.

This sporty timepiece is offered on a black rubber strap with a matching black DLC deployant clasp.

Roger Dubuis – bio

In 1995, Mr Roger Dubuis and his partner Mr Carlos Dias (designer) founded the company aiming to produce only 28 watches per model and each with the coveted Geneva Hallmark to attest the highest precision and quality standard hence keeping the brand’s exclusive status, initial launching the Hommage and then the Sympathie collection.
2008 saw the Richemont group acquire part of the company and since 2016 the full ownership, some of the early pieces are now known among collectors as the “pre” Richemont models, the new management expanded the manufacture and production line into new concept with more modern designs.
Mr Dubuis passed away in 2017.
