In 2011, inspired by the restoration of a pocket watch featuring an Arabic calendar, Parmigiani Fleurier developed an exclusive table clock with a Hijri perpetual calendar.

The conventional calendar used as standard across the world is the Gregorian calendar, with 365 days a year and an extra day in February every 4 years (leap year). But before the Gregorian calendar, there have been other ones to keep track of time and events, such as the Islamic, or the Hijri calendar, established in the 6th Century.

Unlike the Gregorian (solar) calendar, Hijri is based on the lunar cycle, or simply put the moon phase, with 29 or 30 days each month, and falls short of 10 – 12 days each year compared to its Gregorian cousin. The Islamic Calendar has a 30-year cycle with 11 “leap” years of 355 days and 19 years of 354 days.

For the first time in Parmigiani Fleurier’s history, the Hijri Perpetual Calendar complication is made available in a wristwatch.

The platinum case is based on Parmigiani’s iconic Tonda collection and measures 44.5 mm, featuring a slate-grey dial displaying the hours, minutes, and date in Arabic numerals, the name and length of the months in Arabic calligraphy, as well as the abundant and the common years. It also features a moon phase in an aventurine sky. The sub-dial between 3 and 4 features the names of the twelve months in white, except for the ninth month which is Ramadan, which is marked in bright red. Depending on the phase of the moon, each month varies between 29 or 30 days, and so any given year it can vary by a difference of -10 to -12 days. The subdial between 7 and 8 o’clock is the date indicator that goes to 30 and has a small dot indicator that shows whether it is currently a 29 or 30 day month.

At 12 o’clock is the subdial that indicates the year of the cycle with the leap years marked in orange and the standard common years marked by white dots.

There are hints of Islamic culture throughout the dial and the movement, such as the counterweight of the seconds hand which is crafted as a crescent moon. The bridges are also cut in the shape of crescent moon and there is design elements featuring the Rub el Hizb, which is an Islamic geometric symbol composed of two overlapping squares with a circle in the center.

The movement powering this magnificent timepiece is the manufacture Calibre PF 332, with a platinum rotor and offering a power reserve of up to 48 hours. The finishing on the movement is impeccable featuring beveled edges, polished screws and Geneva stripes.

The Parmigiani Hijri Perpetual Calendar is limited to 20 pieces and comes on a black alligator Hermes strap.
