IWC’s foray into the perpetual calendar chronograph territory started in 1985, with the launch of the Da Vinci – Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3750. A project spearheaded by the industry veteran, and the then design engineer at IWC, Mr. Kurt Klaus. The result of almost five years of development work was the IWC 79060 calibre. Over the years, IWC has remastered and perfected the caliber to make this complication a more practical, user friendly and adaptable into various aesthetic representations.

Since then, we have seen an entire range of IWC perpetual calendar chronographs across almost all models including the Da Vinci Kurt Klaus edition in a tonneau case, the Big Pilot, the Ingenieur with the digital date / month, and the Portugieser.

The present reference IW504401 Portuguese Tourbillon Mystere Retrograde was introduced in 2014. It features a platinum case measuring 44.2mm in diameter, but with short tapered lugs so it doesn’t feel too chunky on the wrist.

The counter at 12 o’clock displays the beautiful tourbillon, at 3 o’clock show’s the power reserve counter and at 6 o’clock indicates the date. The Ruthenium black dial with silver-tone hands and numerals gives this beauty the much deserved luxurious appeal.

Seen through the sapphire caseback is the manufacture Calibre 51900. An automatic winding movement offering a 168-hr power reserve.

This masterpiece is offered on a hand-stitched black alligator leather strap.
