There is lot more to Audemars Piguet than the overly popular myriad of Royal Oak references and the infamous Code 11:59. The brand’s history brims with creative prowess both in terms of design and technicality. Breathtaking timepieces that have stood the tests of time and are today, highly sought after by true watch connoisseurs. One such rarity is the Star Wheel.

First launched in 1991 (Ref: 25720), it was a result of almost 2 years of development, and inspired by the concept of wandering-hours complication first used on a night clock designed for Pope Alexander XII in 1656 by the Campani brothers, a well-known family of clockmakers in Rome. The concept later found its way to some pocket watches.

The complex mechanism of the Star Wheel features three sapphire disks on the dial with printed hours rotating on a center wheel. The name of the watch is derived from the star wheels which connect the sapphire disks to this rotating center wheel. The minutes are marked on a 120-degree sector across the upper periphery of the dial, and the time is displayed as the hour-discs glide over the minutes track.

The present Ref: 25720BA is an extremely rare example in 18K yellow gold launched is 1992. The stepped case measures 36mm with short, downturned lugs. While most of the dial is taken up by the three sapphire discs and the white minutes track, the rest of the dial is made in yellow gold featuring a beautiful hand-engraving on the space surrounding the discs. The center wheel is hand-finished with angling and polishing.

On the inside is the AP Caliber 2224 offering 40 hours power reserve. The handsomely finished movement can be admired through the sapphire case back, featuring brushed finishing on the bridges, polished screw-heads and perlage on the baseplate. The rotor features a 21K gold weight.

This rare beauty is offered on a black alligator strap.

Audemars Piguet – bio

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
