Every year Patek Philippe creates a host of one-of-a-kind watches that showcase the brand’s incredible expertise and prowess in some of the most difficult and diverse arts, such as Cloisonné Enamel, Wood Marquetry, Engraving and Guillochè. The collection is aptly called “Rare Handicrafts”.

Patek Philippe dedicates countless hours to preserving these rare artistic métiers. The subject of each timepiece is unique, and the execution of the art is flawless. These subjects are carefully chosen and then brought to life in the form of a timepiece in this ultra-exclusive collection of clocks and watches. Mostly seen only in pictures, these unique pieces pass directly from the workshop to the clients.

The present reference 5077P-100 St Pierre Cathedral (of Geneva) is one such unique piece. It was launched in Baselworld 2014 as a part of the two-piece set, the other being the reference 5077P-099 Notre-Dame Cathedral (of Paris).

The art on the dial features an extremely rare and unheard-of technique called the “Grisaille du blanc Limoges”. Here, white enamel is applied on a black base using a fine brush or a needle, creating subtle gradations from black to white including all the shades of grey. This is an intricate application of enamel and the detail is so fine, it is nearly impossible to find a stroke out of line even under a 15-fold magnifier. The dial goes through 22 firings, with the integration of 24CT gold powder for the cathedral spires.

It is encased in a 38mm platinum case, powered by Caliber 240, an ultra-thin self-winding movement featuring a 22K gold micro rotor and offering a 48hr power reserve.

This truly rare, and unusually beautiful piece of art is offered on a black crocodile strap.

Patek Philippe – Bio

Patek Philippe & Co. was founded in 1839, located in Geneva and the Vallée de Joux. It designs and manufactures timepieces and movements, including some of the most complicated mechanical watches. It is considered by many experts and aficionados to be one of the most prestigious watch manufacturers.
In 1868, Patek Philippe made their first wristwatch, which was sold on November 13, 1876 to the Hungarian Countess.
It is the last independent, family-owned Genevan watch manufacture with uninterrupted operating history spanning nearly 180 years.
