First launched in 1968, the Golden Ellipse is the second longest running timepiece from Patek Philippe after Calatrava.
It was launched under the leadership of Henry Stern, who could be credited for the evolution of the brand, introducing most modern timepieces at the time, to stay abreast with the dynamism of the market.

The design of the Golden Ellipse, a hybrid of an oval and a rectangle, broke from the traditional form and was apparently based on the captivating concept of the “golden section” discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians and whose proportions have inspired various architectural masterpieces throughout history.
In a world of complications, the simple time-only design of this timepiece struck the right balance between minimalism and elegance.
It became so popular that by the late 1970s the collection had 65 different references, including several high-jewelry models for ladies, and later it also had a Nautilus version (Ref 3770/1 launched in 1981).

Initially powered by a manually wound movement, in 1977 the ultra-thin Caliber 240 automatic movement was introduced and can be still found inside anniversary models of the timepiece.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the collection Patek Philippe released a limited edition of 100 Jubilee sets that include two Golden Ellipse watches in platinum – one for him and one for her (reference 5738P-001 and reference 3738/100P-001), a pair of white gold cufflinks (ref. 205.9102GR-001) and a white gold necklace with diamonds and sapphires (ref. 285.1/1.GR)

The presented watches come in a platinum case (34mm x 39mm, with self-winding Cal. 240/111 for the gentleman and 30mm x 35mm with Self-winding Cal. 240 AIG.1 for the lady) with a blue sunburst dial, applied baton indexes and baron hands in 18k white gold, hidden t-bar lugs, solid platinum case-back, with a platinum Patek Philippe Ellipse buckle.

Patek Philippe – Bio

Patek Philippe & Co. was founded in 1839, located in Geneva and the Vallée de Joux. It designs and manufactures timepieces and movements, including some of the most complicated mechanical watches. It is considered by many experts and aficionados to be one of the most prestigious watch manufacturers.
In 1868, Patek Philippe made their first wristwatch, which was sold on November 13, 1876 to the Hungarian Countess.
It is the last independent, family-owned Genevan watch manufacture with uninterrupted operating history spanning nearly 180 years.
