Description

In 2015, Patek Philippe took a page from their 1930s history book and launched a travel time-equipped Calatrava reference  5524G taking the Patek collector’s community by surprise.
A sporty 42mm case based on the vintage pilot’s watches aesthetic with luminous Arabic numerals on a matte blue dial, featuring Patek’s travel time complication.
Initially it was received with mixed emotions, however over the next few years, it grew in popularity gaining critical acclaim.
A beautiful timepiece, with a bold aesthetic, old-time charm and straightforward functional.
As it earned its place among the watch community, the collection was expanded into 5524R, the 7234R and two limited editions made for the brand’s biennial, the 5522A for the 2017 New York Exhibition and 7234A for the 2019 Singapore Exhibition.

In 2019, the present reference 5520P was introduced, with the addition of the 24-hour alarm with a digital display of the alarm time to the existing travel-time complication.

This 42.2mm platinum beauty with 4 crowns is a very unconventional Patek Philippe grand complication. The dial features big and bold luminous Arabic numerals and a second timezone indicated by a skeleton hand with individual AM/PM indicators for both local and home times. The aperture under 12 o’clock displays the alarm (coordinated with the local time). A bell-shaped detail just above the aperture acts as an alarm on-off indicator and a small indicator below shows the AM/PM for the alarm. A large sub dial at 6 o’clock displays the date. All this marked in white against a stunning matte black dial. As detailed and complicated as it sounds, it is equally easy and practical to operate, and perhaps one of the logical grand complications out there.
The alarm sound is a musical hammer-and-gong-style chiming alarm, and not the usual vibrating and buzzing.

The movement is the Patek Philippe in-house automatic Calibre AL 30-660 S C FUS, offering 52 hours of power reserve. It is beautifully designed and decorated stamped with the Patek Philippe hallmark seal, and can be admired through the sapphire case back.

A grand complication that one could use everyday, this one’s a perfect travel companion for the discerning collector.

Offered on a black soft grain leather strap with a Patek Philippe deployant clasp.
