Large rectangular cases with tourbillon, although not commercially produced, are not new to Patek Philippe. One of the best examples is the reference 3834, made in 1960, cased in 1981. It was awarded the First Prize at the Geneva Astronomical Observatory, timing contest 1962. Five pieces of this reference were made: 4 for the Patek Philippe Museum, and 1 for the Beyer Museum in Zurich. Then there are the Gondolo references

The present reference 5101p-010 was launched in 2003, later discontinued only to be replaced by the yellow gold version with a lacquered enamel dial. It takes on from the Ref: 5100 and does one better with a Tourbillon inside. The case design takes its inspiration from the Gondolo Ref: 5124, with further enhancement.

The chunk of platinum is carved into a 30mm Art Deco style case with a stepped design and lugs that extend further away from the dial. The dial itself is a gorgeous salmon with blackened Breguet numerals, leaf hands, featuring a 10-day power reserve in the upper half and a sub-seconds just above 6 o’clock.

Seen through the sapphire caseback is a movement built to case, with a three-quarter bridge covering the entire Calibre, revealing only the tourbillon, which is of course the show-stopper in this gorgeous timepiece.
The black-polished tourbillon bridge discreetly separates the top and the bottom bridges, which are all decorated with Geneva stripes and hand-polished edges. The detail of the finish is stunning!

This unusually gorgeous piece is an acquired taste, and comes on a tan brown alligator strap and a matching platinum pin buckle.

Patek Philippe – Bio

Patek Philippe & Co. was founded in 1839, located in Geneva and the Vallée de Joux. It designs and manufactures timepieces and movements, including some of the most complicated mechanical watches. It is considered by many experts and aficionados to be one of the most prestigious watch manufacturers.
In 1868, Patek Philippe made their first wristwatch, which was sold on November 13, 1876 to the Hungarian Countess.
It is the last independent, family-owned Genevan watch manufacture with uninterrupted operating history spanning nearly 180 years.
