Description
First launched in 1968, the Golden Ellipse is the second longest running timepiece from Patek Philippe after Calatrava.
It was launched under the leadership of Henry Stern, who could be credited for the evolution of the brand, introducing most modern timepieces at the time, to stay abreast with the dynamism of the market.
The design of the Golden Ellipse, a hybrid of an oval and a rectangle, broke from the traditional form and was apparently based on the captivating concept of the “golden section” discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians and whose proportions have inspired various architectural masterpieces throughout history. In a world of complications, the simple time-only design of this timepiece struck the right balance between minimalism and elegance.
It became so popular that by the late 1970s the collection had 65 different references, including several high-jewelry models for ladies, and later it also had a Nautilus version (Ref 3770/1 launched in 1981). Initially powered by a manually wound movement, in 1977 the ultra-thin Caliber 240 automatic movement was introduced and can be still found inside anniversary models of the timepiece.
The present reference 5738/51G-001 is part of the ‘rare handcrafts’ timepieces from Patek. The 18K white gold case measure 34.5mm x 39.5 mm featuring a highly original face. The 18K gold dial plate is first hollowed out to form the cavities for the Grand Feu black enamel, using the champlevé technique.
The gold areas left in relief are then entirely hand-engraved with an arabesques and volutes decor. On the inside is the ultra-thin self-winding Caliber 240.
This rare piece of art is offered on a shiny black hand-stitched alligator strap with an 18K white gold prong buckle.
Novelty 2021, comes with its complete original set and a 2 year international warranty.
