Description

In 1996, Patek Philippe introduced a new calendar complication, called the annual calendar. Almost as practical as a perpetual calendar, but a lot less simple and a lot more accessible. The patented calendar required only one correction a year at the transition from February to March. The first reference to house this complication was the 5035 in yellow gold.

10 years later, in 2006 Patek introduced the reference 5960 combining for the first time, the annual calendar and the brand’s first inhouse chronograph, making this the most practical timepiece within the brand’s catalogue. This reference had a successful 10-year production run, until it was replaced with the upgraded model, the reference 5905 which debuted during Baselworld 2015.

Aesthetically they had small but noticeable differences. While the 5960 featured a 40.5mm case with a plain dial, a power reserve indicator, and pump chrono pushers, the 5905 came with a sector dial, without the power reserve indicator, and rectangle pushers running along the 42mm concave case.

The present reference 5905/1A-001 was launched in 2021 featuring a striking olive sunburst green dial, same shade of green used on the 5711/1A. It has since become the ‘Year of the Green’ in the horology world. The dial features an annual calendar displayed along the upper half, with a chronograph counter at 6 o’clock and a day/night indicator.

The white gold dauphine hands and index markers compliment the sporty aesthetic of the steel bracelet, which is also a first for this reference. On the inside is the Self-winding Caliber CH 28‑520 QA 24H powering the Flyback Chronograph, Annual Calendar, Day, date, month and day/night indicator, offering up to 55hrs power reserve.

Although the movement construction is not as classic, Patek has left no stone unturned when it comes to the finishing of the bridges, baseplate and the rotor, signing it off with the PP Hallmark of approval.
