Description

RAID stands for Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion (“Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence”), an elite tactical unit of the French National Police. Founded in 1985, it is one of the most effective police forces in the world, branched out into special forces, intervention, monitoring, research and development and forensics.

What has that got to do with watches?
Antoine de Macedo, owner of one of the oldest collectible watch shops in Paris, met with RAID leaders in 2015. They soon became friends, and Antoine was offered a medallion of the prestigious unit. He approached both RAID and Omega to do a collaborative edition of the Speedmaster using the medallion as the case back of the watch.

Thus, in 2017 a special watch for a special unit was born.

The Omega Speedmaster RAID edition is limited to 250pcs and was made exclusively for the members of the RAID unit. It was not available for general public.

What’s distinctive about this model, as compared to the other Speedmaster is that the background reproduces the RAID’s motto – SERVIR SANS FAILLIR (to serve unfailingly) – as well as its badge in a central medallion. It is numbered XXX/250, and the chronograph hands are respectively blue, white and red, three colors which are included in the arrow on the central chronograph hand – colors of the French flag. On the inside is reliable workhorse caliber 1861.

The packaging is equally attractive and interesting, with a special box customized with the name of the RAID. It includes a unit medallion and two NATO-type straps.

Omega – bio

Omega was established in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. The company has been at the forefront of technology and innovation from its early days. In 1947, Omega created the Calber 301 – the first wristwatch tourbillon caliber in the world. Omega made history in 1962 when astronaut Wally Schirra wore a Speedmaster on his Mercury Sigma 7 Mission, making it the first watch to enter outer space. Omega’s Speedmaster became the official watch of NASA on the American space missions such as the Apollo 11 Moonlanding in 1967 and the Apollo 13 in 1970 where the watch played a crucial role in bringing the astronauts back home safely. The brand has also been the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932. Since 1995 it has been serving as a crucial tool for the British Secret Service agent “James Bond” when it was first endorsed by Pierce Brosnan in the movie GoldenEye.
These diverse associations make Omega one of the most popular and recognizable watch brands in the world.
