Description

Cartier Tortue was launched in 1912, predating the Tank, the more popular of the two. It was inspired by the shape of a tortoise shell and soon became the maison’s model of choice for its early complicated wristwatches. In 1920 the Tortue minute repeater was introduced, and then a monopusher chronograph in 1928. This goes to show the significance of this model in Cartier’s history.

But it is also important to note that initially, Tortue was only made upon request by Cartier’s special clients. In the mid-1990s when the CPCP (Collection Privée Cartier Paris) was established, Tortue was one of the few models that were re-introduced as part of this extraordinary collection.
More than a century later, the distinct shape of Tortue holds its own among all the different case styles out there.

The present reference Cartier d’Art, Tortue XL is an extremely rare example that showcases Cartier’s prowess as a watchmaker and a jeweler. One of just 25 pieces made in early 2000, this stunning piece is crafted to look like a swimming tortoise. The 18K yellow gold case measures 34mm X 33mm featuring the head, tail and legs on the bezel in crafted in champlevé enamel and the eyes set with 2 diamonds. The dial is made in intricate wood marquetry of colored stones on wood depicting the top of its shell.

The case back completes the design with the cloisonné enamel motif showing the underside of a swimming turtle.

The masterpiece is powered by the manual winding Calibre 420MC and is offered on a black leather strap, with Cartier deployant 18K yellow gold clasp.
