The Royal Oak design has become a cultural icon, with its distinct features such as the octagonal bezel with perfectly aligned screws (bolts) and the bracelet like none other. Gerald Genta’s masterpiece was inspired by a scaphander diving helmet, complete with eight screws and the joint visible on the cases’ exterior.
The original reference 5402 “Jumbo” was released in 1972 featuring a 39mm stainless steel case with an integrated bracelet, making it Audemars Piguet’s first luxury sports watch. It has stood the test of time for almost 50 years and still going strong.
In 1992, celebrating Royal Oak’s 20th Anniversary, AP released the reference 14802 with a sapphire caseback, limited to 1,000 pieces (700 in steel, 280 in yellow gold and 20 in platinum).
In 2012, as part of its 40th Anniversary, the most relevant modern Royal Oak was introduced in the form of reference 15202 extra thin Jumbo in steel and rosegold. Since then, we have seen a yellow gold with blue dial version introduced in 2017.
The present reference 15206PT.OO.1240PT.01 – Royal Oak Jumbo Extra Thin Platinum was launched quietly on AP’s website in 2020, alongside its rose gold sibling 15207OR exclusively for the Japanese market.
Limited to just 70 pieces in the world but supplied mainly to the Japanese market, it features a platinum case measuring 39mm x 8.1mm, a black onyx dial, brilliant-cut diamond set hour-markers, white gold Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating, a minutes track in white, a date window at 3 0’clock and the AP logo at 6 0’clock.
On the inside is the legendary Caliber 2121 which is still the thinnest full rotor automatic movement in the world. Powering the hours, minutes and the date, it offers 40hr power reserve.
This exclusive timepiece on a 950 platinum case is the last series of the current AP Jumbo (15202) family, which has been announced as discontinued, 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of this legendary model and a new line will certainly be presented.

Audemars Piguet – bio
Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
