Description

When launched in 1972, the Royal Oak was an experimental luxury sports watch, destined for a production run of 1,000 pieces only. Gerald Genta himself said he would’ve never approved it for production, since the design did not resonate with Audemars Piguet’s past, neither did it embody any of the characteristics of the brand’s DNA.

Who would’ve known, that 50 years later the Royal Oak would almost entirely become the new identity of the brand.
So what was Audemars Piguet’s DNA?
The company was established in 1975, 100 years before the before the birth of Royal Oak, and was popular for making complications. The first Audemars Piguet perpetual calendar wristwatch was released in 1957. And the world’s first thinnest self-winding automatic caliber featuring a central rotor that had a thickness of 2.45mm, released in 1967.

Then in 1972, came the Royal Oak. This reference proved to be a blank canvas to paint the company’s rich history. In the decades that followed, it has been presented in several sizes, colors and complications. The identity of this reference is so strong, that it has overshadowed pretty much everything that AP has achieved pre-Royal Oak.
So what happens when AP decides to put all of its technical prowess into this mega-iconic case?

Presenting the jaw-dropping Grand Complication reference 25865BC.OO.1105BC.01

Encased in 44mm white gold is a gorgeous salmon dial, featuring a split-seconds chronograph, a minute repeater and a perpetual calendar complete with the weeks and moon phases indication at 12 o’clock, days of the week at 3 o’clock, months and leap year at 6 o’clock and date at 9 o’clock. The sub-dials also double up as chrono counters. The sliding lever along the case band activates the minute repeater.

Under the hood is the AP in-house calibre 2885 automatic movement offering 45hrs of power reserve, and is crafted almost entirely in pink gold, complimenting the gorgeous salmon / pink dial.

This marvelous timepiece comes on a solid 18K white gold Royal Oak bracelet, with box and original warranty papers.

Audemars Piguet – bio

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
