Description

The ‘Royal Oak’ overturned the prevailing codes in 1972 during a period of existential crisis for the watch industry due to the boom of the cheap Quartz watches made in Asia.
The company had to come with a bold, solid stainless sports steel luxury watch, they gave the mission to Gerald Genta to design it.

He got the inspiration from a deep-sea-diving helmet, the result was an octagonal bezel, visible mounting screws, a large case of 39mm with an integrated bracelet, a very futuristic design for the seventies.
Within 2-3 years they sold about 1000 watches establishing a new segment within the industry and pioneered the popularity and desirability of the steel sports luxury watch.

The first model released was the reference 5402 known today as the “Royal Oak A series”, with a thin automatic calibre 2121 movement that is still made today. Since they treated steel as gold, the level of finishing was remarkable and so was the retail price, for comparison purpose a similar Rolex sport watch was 10x cheaper.

Today, Audemars Piguet still produces a range of Royal Oaks in different sizes (33 to 41mm) for ladies and men, from titanium, rose gold, yellow gold and platinum metals, various dial colours and with different complications.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Extra-Thin Tourbillon, reference 26510IP.OO.1220IP.01, is a horological masterpiece that exemplifies the brand’s prowess in combining avant-garde technology with timeless design. This model, part of the esteemed Royal Oak collection, is a testament to the brand’s legacy of crafting ultra-thin movements that do not compromise on precision or elegance.

Forged from a blend of titanium and platinum, this 41mm timepiece redefines luxury with its extraordinary resilience and distinctive sheen. The use of titanium ensures a lightweight feel, while platinum accents elevate the watch’s prestige. The signature octagonal bezel, secured by eight hexagonal screws, is instantly recognizable and sits atop a case that houses one of horology’s most intricate complications: the tourbillon.

The tourbillon, visible through the sapphire crystal dial, is not merely a mechanism; it is a mesmerizing dance of gears and springs that defy gravity, enhancing the watch’s timekeeping accuracy. This openworked dial not only reveals the complex beauty of the movement but also serves as a stage for the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, which draws the eye with its delicate yet hypnotic motion.

The dial itself, in a smoked blue hue with a “Petite Tapisserie” pattern, is quintessentially Royal Oak. The platinum hour markers and Royal Oak hands are filled with luminescent coating, ensuring legibility in all conditions. The integration of the dial with the movement creates a symphony of engineering and aesthetics, making the watch as much a pleasure to observe as it is to wear.

Encircling the wrist is the integrated 950 platinum and titanium bracelet, which seamlessly continues the design language of the case. The bracelet is engineered to provide comfort and durability, and features a folding clasp that ensures the watch remains secure on the wearer’s wrist.

The Royal Oak Extra-Thin Tourbillon is powered by the Audemars Piguet Calibre 2924, an in-house manual winding movement that is a mere 4.46mm thick, yet provides a 70-hour power reserve. This extraordinary timepiece, with its sophisticated engineering and impeccable styling, is a bold statement of Audemars Piguet’s commitment to excellence in modern watchmaking.

Audemars Piguet – bio

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
