Audemars Piguet Royal Oak series is iconic due to its unique turn from the brand’s usual aesthetics. Conceptualized by the legendary Gérald Genta, its muse was a diver’s helmet. The rest is history.

The first timepiece from this collection features a 39 mm steel sports watch, with telltale features of a fixed bracelet, a bezel that was raised, screws in hexagonal motifs, and a Tapisserie dial. It was brought to the public’s eye in 1972, during the Basel Fair.

The audience at that time didn’t quite know what to make of it. On one hand, it was highly innovative and considered marvelously future-oriented. On the other, it cost more than some gold watches of that era. Nevertheless, it became a success, with more than a thousand pieces being sold in two years.

The Royal Oak dual-time digresses even further from tradition, adding a dual-time complication with its traditional case. That being said, it was only 36 mm for a while, but is now 39 mm, with a thickness of 10.3 mm. The case, in stainless steel, displays a glare-proofed sapphire crystal and a chicly screw-locked crown.

The dual-date complication shows another timezone, which is simply perfect for a modern watch collector. In an era where traveling or working away from home is the norm, it appeals to the newer generation. Other facets include a 24-hour function, a date aperture, and a 38-hour power reserve indicator.

Its silver/white dial hones the iconic “Grande Tapisserie” pattern, featuring hour-markers in white gold and classic luminescent-coated Royal Oak hands. The bracelet comes in stainless steel and an AP folding clasp. The caliber 2329/2846 features a 26.6 mm diameter and 4 mm thickness, is self-winding, and has 261 parts with 33 jewels.

Audemars Piguet – bio

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
