Description
Introduced in 1972, the revolutionary Royal Oak collection by Audemar Piguet became an instant classic among discerning collectors. The watchmaker brought a luxury steel watch to the forefront with a design that was far ahead of its time. The timepiece became a major success and is a legend in the horological space. Surpassing the wonders of design, it remains a contemporary icon.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 50th Anniversary is of “Jumbo” size and is an ode to the one and only Royal Oak 5402 crafted in 1972. Featuring a steel case, “Tapisserie” dial, and octagonal bezel, the piece is completed with a rivetting integrated bracelet with an AP folding clasp. It marks the collection’s 50th anniversary in true artistic and sophisticated style.
The watch’s spellbinding Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 “Petite Tapisserie” dial is a beautiful homage to the original piece. Markers are aesthetically presented in white gold and Royal Oak hands, adorned by a luminescent coating.
Crafted from steel fashioned and finished by hand, the case showcases a sapphire crystal and caseback which is glare-proofed for added functionality. Sized at 39mm with a thickness of 8mm, the watch has a water resistance of 50m.
The Royal Oak’s 50th Anniversary self-winding movement is new, with a Calibre 7121, featuring 33 jewels, and a power reserve of 55 hours. It is complemented by a pink gold rhodium-glazed “50-years” weight that oscillates, adding to the anniversary charm, available this year only with that 50th Anniversary configuration.
Audemars Piguet – bio
Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
