The ‘Royal Oak’ overturned the prevailing codes in 1972 during a period of existential crisis for the watch industry due to the boom of the cheap Quartz watches made in Asia.

The company had to come with a bold, solid stainless sports steel luxury watch, they gave the mission to Gerald Genta to design it.
He got the inspiration from a deep-sea-diving helmet, the result was an octagonal bezel, visible mounting screws, a large case of 39mm with an integrated bracelet, a very futuristic design for the seventies.

Within 2-3 years they sold about 1000 watches establishing a new segment within the industry and pioneered the popularity and desirability of the steel sports luxury watch.

– In 1993 the standard Royal Oak being already 20 years old, the brand looking for a younger generation clientele came with a very polarised design, people in the industry calling it “The Beast”.

The shocking 42mm for that time, with apparent rubber seal on the bezel, the rubber pushers were in contrast to the elegant Royal Oak but the Offshore turned out to be a great success.

The present reference, Audemars Piguet Lebron James Limited Edition (Ref: 26210OI.OO.A109CR.01) was introduced in the year 2013, and only 600 pieces were produced in collaboration with one of the greatest basketball legends of our time.
Dedicated to a sports icon and crafted in an iconic case, this timepiece is iconic in every sense.
It features a 44mm titanium and rosegold RoyalOak Offshore case, with a matte grey “Méga Tapisserie” dial. The splash of gold, with the subtlety of the grey makes this is an unusually attractive timepiece.

The dial displays the big and bold applied indices in rosegold, with matching rosegold hands which are further lumed. The date is displayed through a round aperture at 3 o’clock, and the chronograph subdials at 6, 9 and 12. The chapter ring is satin polished and sits slightly above the “Méga Tapisserie” , adding a certain depth to the dial.

The bezel is vertically brushed titanium and the iconic RoyalOak bezel bolts in contrasting high-polish 18K white gold. The chronopushers are pretty interesting. The Start-Stop pusher is discreetly adorned with 14 brilliant-cut diamonds, while the Reset pusher and the crown are in plain black ceramic. The crown guards are made in rosegold and grey rubber, complimenting the rest of the watch.

The case has a 100mtrs water-resistance and features a sapphire case-back revealing the automatic Caliber 3126/3840 offering a 55-hr power reserve. The finishing on the movement is spectacular with circular graining on the mainplate, côtes de Genève on the beveled bridges, and a skeleton rotor in 22k gold with an anthracite galvanic treatment and a raised Audemars Piguet “AP” logo. The cherry on top is Lebron James’ signature in blue on the case-back.

This gorgeous timepiece comes on a sporty grey rubber strap with a rosegold AP pin buckle which flawlessly gels with the rest of the watch. It also comes with an additional hand-stitched alligator strap.

Audemars Piguet – bio

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss manufacturer of mechanical watches founded in 1875. They began in the Vallée de Joux. Jules Louis Audemars formed a partnership with Edward Auguste Piguet. Audemars created complicated blank watch movements for other manufactures to use. Piguet specialized in the final regulation of watches. They then split responsibilities when they began their own company. Audemars was in charge of production and technical aspects while Piguet focused on sales and management. One of their first achievements was creating the first repeater wristwatch in 1892 and in 1972 the iconic steel “Royal Oak”.
